The Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition (MARC) is an End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Network. ESRD Networks help dialysis and transplant facilities improve the quality of care provided at the dialysis units and transplant facilities. MARC oversees the facilities in Network 5, which includes facilities in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. There are over 25,000 patients in Network 5 and over 370 hemodialysis facilities.
MARC can measure how well a facility is providing care to its patients by looking at patient lab values, or the number of grievances that MARC has received about a facility. Sometimes MARC has dialysis facilities participate in projects to improve the quality of care in the dialysis unit. Facilities are required to cooperate with quality improvement projects if they receive payment from Medicare.
It is important that patients be involved in their care. It is also important to have patients involved in the work we do. Patients and families can join our project workgroups, which drive change in the dialysis facilities. In these groups, patients and families provide direction and actively help the Network to improve the quality of care that all patients receive. MARC is also required by law to investigate complaints and grievances that patients have about their dialysis or transplant facility. For more information, visit the Grievances
section of this site.
